PUPPY HELPS SWAYZE FIGHT CANCER

Patrick Swayze says his new puppy is helping him fight cancer.

The "Dirty Dancing" star - who was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in January 2008 - is keeping busy by focusing his energies on writing a new book and spending time with his new puppy Kumasai.

He said: "There is a brand new, 12-week-old, Rhodesian Ridgeback puppy named Kumasai in my life who is gorgeous and already showing that he will be one special dog."

"Also, I am starting work on my new book, in addition to enjoying the fantastic response from everyone on my A+E series 'The Beast.' I have so much to be thankful for at this time."

The 56-year-old actor has also revealed he has started a new course of radiotherapy treatment in his bid to beat the illness.

He added: "There are so many positive things going on in my life right now. I've started a new chemotherapy and, once again, I am one of the lucky ones with pancreatic cancer that is responding well to the treatment."

Rather than dwell on his prognosis, Patrick is determined to raise awareness of the disease and recently asked the US government to pledge more money to cancer research in an emotional plea.

He said: "For me, fighting cancer is personal. Ever since I was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in January 2008, I've been waging an intense, often hellacious battle. It's me (with a lot of love and medical support) against my disease."

"But I'm not alone. More than 1.4 million Americans will be diagnosed with cancer this year. In the United States, one out of three women and one out of two men will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetimes."

"Look around you - at one point or another, cancer will strike very close to home for everyone."

"You know what, he's doing what everybody else is doing, he's taking it one day at a time," friend Whoopi Goldberg revealed on British TV.

"He does not have an expiration date on his backside - none of us do - we just know at some point it's going to happen and that's how he's looking at it. "
