Hon-Lun Helan Yang is a Professor of Music at Hong Kong Baptist University. Yang¡¦s research interests are cross-cultural, specializing in nineteenth-century American music and contemporary Chinese music both ¡¥serious¡¦ and ¡¥popular¡¦ in style and appeal. She is the author of over 30 articles that appeared in journals such as International Review of Aesthetics and Sociology of Music (2011), Asian Music (2010), Music and Politics (2007), CHIME (2005), American Music (2003), and BLOK (2003) and book chapters as in Music, Power, and Politics (Routledge, 2005), Music, Meaning & Media (Hakapaino, Helsinki, 2006), Music and Censorship (Oxford University, forthcoming), Music and Protest in 1968 (Cambridge University Press, forthcoming), Music and Politics (Ashgate, forthcoming). She is currently working on a book about three contemporary Chinese composers: Zhu Jian¡¦er, Luo Zhongrong, and Wang Xilin as well as co-editing with Michael Saffle on a volume entitled East-West Musical Encounters: Representation, Reception, and Power Politics in Sino-Western Musical Relations.

3.3 ¡§It¡¦s Now or Never¡¨(1960)

Some of Elvis¡¦s predecessors and contemporaries¡Xincluding Mario Lanza,
Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra¡Xmade their reputations throughout the 1940s, 1950s,
and early 1960s singing passionate Italian love songs. They sang these songs in the
full-throated vocal style known as bel canto (beautiful singing). Much nineteenth- and
early twentieth-century opera, including the works of Bellini, Donizetti, and Verdi,
employs this style; a famous example of bel canto melody is ¡§Nessun dorma¡¨ (None
shall sleep) from Puccini¡¦s Turandot. Today most people think of Elvis as a rock-¡¥n¡¦-
roller, or possibly as a movie star, but ¡§It¡¦s Now or Never¡¨, recorded shortly after he
left the army, demonstrates his ability to sing beautifully and even ¡¥classically¡¦ in an
arrangement of the Neapolitan melody ¡§O sole mio¡¨ (O Lonely Me¡¦).

Saffle

Ph.D. in Musicology and Humanities at Stanford University, 1977.

Michael Saffle is professor in the Department of Religion and Culture at Virginia Tech. He has published articles and reviews in the Journal of the American Musicological Society, Acta Musicologica, Notes, the Programmhefte of Bayreuth¡¦s Wagner Festival, Music & Letters, and the Leonardo Music Journal as well as the International Dictionary of Black Composers and other reference works. His books include Franz Liszt: A Guide to Research, revised and republished by Routledge in 2004 and again in 2009; and he served as editor for American biographical entries on behalf of the German music encyclopedia, Die Musik in Geschichte und Gegenwart (Kassel: Bärenreiter, 1994-2008). Other of his publications deal with such issues as emerging images of Europe in contemporary American film and television, the transformation of Beijing as a postmodern megacity since ¡¥Reform and Opening¡¦ began in 1978, and the Chinese pop group 12 Girls Band.


As a teacher, Saffle has three times won Virginia Tech¡¦s Certificate of Teaching Excellence; and in 2007 he received the William E. Wine Award from Tech¡¦s Academy of Teaching Excellence.


As a scholar, he has held fellowships from the Fulbright and Humboldt Foundations as well as the American Philosophical Society. In 2000-2001 he served as Bicentennial Fulbright Distinguished Professor of American Studies at the University of Helsinki. During Spring 2008, he had the Au Yeung King Fong Research Fellowship at Hong Kong Baptist University, and during Spring 2009 he and his wife Sue taught at VT¡¦s ¡¥European campus¡¦ in Riva San Vitale, Switzerland.


An old ¡§mountain¡¨ house he and his wife restored won a local preservation award in 1989 and was named to the National Register of Historic Places in 1992.


In 2006, on his sixtieth birthday, Professor Saffle was honored with a ¡¥Festschrift¡¦ published as an issue of the cultural-studies ejournal Spaces of Identity  [Volume 6, No. 3 (3 December 2006)].
